INTERIM MANAGER, INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR 1099
CAVALEIR COUNTY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL (25 BED, CRITICAL ACCESS), LANDON, ND
REF: DR. ROBERTS (Medical Director) 407-350-7805, barhealthcare@pm.me
Position hired for: Crisis relief, all lab workers quit with little notice. Performed as: Laboratory Supervisor (Main Lab, Langdon, ND), Laboratory Director (Point of Care Laboratory, Walhalla, ND), Phlebotomist and Bench Technologist.
- Generalist Medical Technologist: Blood bank, chemistry, urinalysis, hematology and coagulation; specimen processing, analyzer maintenance and quality control
- Laboratory Supervisor: Inventory and ordering, trained new staff; performed orientation and competencies, corrective actions, addressed some workflow issues
- Technical Consultant: presentations to the hospital founders, hospital board members and to med-staff, concerning out-of-date methods and modern testing suited to a low volume laboratory serving an ageing population. Proposed solutions for microbiology, point of care, sepsis protocol and infectious disease testing.
- Used 300,000 dollars of federal l grant money to improved hospital-wide refrigerated storage, added molecular testing at both locations and pieces for a limited microbiology section: hood, incubator, microbiology tools for isolation. Plans for infrastructure to support more analyzers: outlets and ethernet connections with 5 distribution manifolds at each bench. Designed lab spaces at both locations: work benches, lighting, outlets, vents, analyzer spaces and installed refrigerators and freezers.
LABORATORY ADMINISTRATION, FULL TIME
GERALD CHAMPION REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER (100 BED), ALAMOGORDO, NM
REF: DR. MIDANI (Pathologist) 505-507-4770, FRANSISCO CARRILLO (Microbiology Lead) 915-702-5450
Position hired for: LIS Supervisor (Laboratory Information System, Cerner), performed as a generalist and Microbiology lead, with responsibility in several departments:
- Microbiology lead: trained new microbiology technicians and laboratory aids in specimen processing, plate reading, sub-culture, Isolate ID & Susceptibility, QC, etc. Explained the need for correct specimen site/source to medical staff. Ended processes that lead to false ID reports, streamlined workflow, decreased turnaround by more than 24 hours for most cultures. Started anaerobic isolation procedure.
- Escalated sepsis protocol by improving laboratory handling of blood cultures: trained all laboratorians to load blood culture bottles into the incubator, added two reflex methods to positive bottles (Gene Xpert: MRSA/SA and Strep A); these help providers decide whether to continue vancomycin.
- Review, edit and originate policies for Microbiology, Urinalysis, Coagulation and Hematology. Create ‘consolidated’ logs to reduce paperwork and mistakes. Simplified workflow: ended redundant steps and sped up plate reading to reduce TAT for final results. Developed a corrective actions process. Quality review and monthly report for the director: PCR workstation, Urinalysis and Microbiology.
- Performed employee orientation, training and annual proficiency for several sections: PCR station (Gene Xpert Cepheid), Urinalysis (Iris), Microbiology (Vitek 2) and Hematology bench. Performed new analyzer training for all generalists (Siemens CS 2500 coagulation analyzer).
- Supply orders for several departments: Inventory weekly, monthly orders, sourced new or alternate consumables, compared cost between vendors or requested better prices on manufacturer supplied consumables; monitored usage and checked last expiration dates prior to ordering to reduce drop-ship costs and shelf expirations.
LABORATORY COORDINATOR, INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR 1099
CROCKETT MEDICAL CENTER, CROCKETT, TX
REF: (SIEMENS APPLICATION SPECIALIST) TEDDERSUE@HOTMAIL.COM, (STANBIO REGIONAL SALES ASSOCIATE) RAQUELGARCIA@EKFDIAGNOSTICS.COM
Opened a hospital laboratory in a rebranded facility that had been closed for 1 year due to bankruptcy:
- Threw out trash: segregated bio-hazardous waste, shredded old documents that contained patient information
- Organized supplies left on premises, recorded lots and expiration of quality control materials and consumables; sourced new vendors and placed orders for general lab supplies, received and organized new shipments into storage
- Contacted regional sales representatives for original sales contracts, service and consumables, established new accounts for the analyzers found on premises and requested service to restart analyzers: Dimension (chemistry), CA 600 (coagulation), Millipore (water), Sysmex (hematology).
- Set up workstations with dedicated equipment, such as: pipettes, timers, thermometers, dispensers; edited or originated policies, established logs and forms for manual methods
- Installed traceable thermometers in storage areas, refrigerators, freezers and temperature sensitive testing areas; Opened new lots and established QC ranges for chemistry and coagulation, validated off-label method for chemistry analyzer (B-hydroxy, quant)
- Established LIS dictionary for the interface (Athena): units of measure, comments, normal results ranges, reflex test points and critical value flags
MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST/INTERIM MANAGER, FOCUS STAFFING
REF: DR. NOVAK (Medical Director, Pathologist) GREGNOVAKUSA@GMAIL.COM, JULIE MULFORD (Ortho-Diagnostics Technical Service Representative) JULIE.MULFORD@ORTHOCLINICALDIAGNOSTICS.COM
Worked in coordination with the interim laboratory director and medical director to support their effort to correct several deficiencies and improve workflow:
- Relay initial observations to the laboratory director, such as: redundant/outdated methods, workflow bottlenecks, level of understanding among the full-time employees.
- Assisted to train staff and started annual competency documentation.
- Attended med-staff meetings then offered new methods for diabetic diagnostic care using analyzers already in place.
- Added new methods and discontinued others: expanded existing analyzer menu to include tests for diabetic population. Validated Urine total protein and Urine, build panels for: 24-hour UTP, A/C ratio, 24-hour UTP/C ratio and Urine electrolytes.
- LIS maintenance: completed an analyzer interface (CA 600), refined manual entry screens to be consistent across all methods in order to eliminate key-stroke errors and eliminated extraneous pop-up windows, added reflex tests to hematology and urinalysis and changed the CMP and BMP external report sequence for an ER doctor who requested that.
- Revised document control process: wrote a policy listing the retention times for each type of document, reorganized and labelled each bundle of documents by type and age, assigned shredding duties (new box in, oldest box shredded)
